Fabulous Fall . . .
by Stephanie Veiga SPIN Happy Helper
This month is Fall in the northern hemisphere. It’s one of the beautiful months, filled with lively colors, spicy flavors and crisp, clean-smelling air. If Fall were a person, she’d probably be Phyllis Diller with all her character! I remember Phyllis for her infectious laugher, she always looked like she was having a good time! Ahhhh, to be as fun loving and vivacious as Phyllis. This fall… BE LIKE PHYLLIS!
Fall is also ‘Sweater Weather’ – and for those of you familiar with the Boston accent, that’s ‘Sweatah Weathah’ to you. Fall also represents a time when we transition into dormancy, the longer nights, cooler air, and comfort foods. We here at SPIN are always about BRAIN, BODY, BEING, AND BUSINESS: you know, the WHOLE you, and in this newsletter we’ll bring you all of that with a BEAUTIFUL fall focus! Enjoy!
BRAIN
For today, we’re going to give your BRAIN a jump start by bringing you the 'word of the day':
BEAUTIFUL - Definition of beautiful according to the Webster guy (no, not the character on Different Strokes) 1: having qualities of beauty : exciting aesthetic pleasure 2: generally pleasing: EXCELLENT They say that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” which essentially means that different people can have a different perception of beauty. For instance, I have collected a few rocks that I have found along my merry way in life. Each one has its own beauty in my eyes. In fact in one of them, I can see a pack of wolves traveling on their journey. To another person, this is just a rock. A big plain rock that I use as my doorstop. Let’s get your BRAIN moving with a few questions. Inquiring minds want to know!

Wildly Different, on the power of Virtual Icebreakers!
VIRTUAL ICEBREAKERS
You work with your colleagues day in and day out, but how much do you really know about them? If your team is working remotely, weaving virtual icebreakers into your Zoom calls and online meetings is an ideal way to foster connections. Many organizations have several new hires who have never even met their colleagues in person. In this blog, we’ll investigate the reasons why virtual icebreakers are important and provide you with a few ideas on how to incorporate them…
REMOTE WORKERS OFTEN FEEL ISOLATED – VIRTUAL ICEBREAKERS CAN HELP THEM FEEL LIKE PART OF THE TEAM.
When you work remotely, you miss out on chit-chat around the water cooler. Work in time to do this virtually and come prepared with some topics you can raise on your Zoom calls to spur conversation. Go “around the room” and ask what everyone is binge watching on TV at the moment. Look for a list of “bizarre” holidays and if your meeting happens to fall on National Ice Cream Day, for instance, ask everyone to share their favorite ice cream flavor.
WHEN PEOPLE PLAY ICEBREAKERS FOR VIRTUAL MEETINGS, THEY REVEAL THEIR TRUE SELVES, ALLOWING THE TEAM TO ASSESS PEOPLE’S STRENGTHS AND WHO WOULD BE GOOD AT CERTAIN TASKS.
Certain virtual games, such as a virtual escape room – our Escape The Arctic game makes a great (and literal) “ice”breaker – give everyone insight on who has great analytical skills, who thinks creatively to approach problems from a different angle, who takes charge of the group to ensure all are working together, etc. You might even find out who on your team is a huge movie buff or someone who loves rock and roll music! Icebreakers for virtual meetings can help a team bond more easily.

BEING
This just in! We’ve heard from Gerry O’Brion recently who provided us with an update on his animals. It seems that Desmond the Support Goat is still up to the same supportive and nurturing ways. You see, recently Maude the Chicken had an argument with some of the other chickens and was feeling some resentments, so she turned to Desmond the Support Goat for guidance. It was said that Gerry overheard their conversation which went something like this…
Maude “Oh Desmond, I’m so upset for CLUCKS sake! Why are those other chickens so mean to me?” Desmond “Dear Maude, you have GOAT to be KIDDING me, don't let them get to you! Now, now, settle down my little feathered friend.” Then Maude jumped on Desmond and the two settled down together, lowered their voices so Gerry could no longer hear the rest of the conversation, and continued to chat up a storm. |
Meanwhile, over in the duck pen Lucy, Sally and Stripe were still going quackers talking smack about the chickens and the argument they just witnessed. Gerry calls them The Judgmental Ducks, because they will talk about you behind your back. Truth be told, these ducks are typically in a fowl mood most of the day so you’ll usually find them kvetching about the other farm animals! Well, what’s the whole moral behind this story of Desmond, Maude, Lucy, Sally and Stripe? The moral is to enjoy your life, and be more like Desmond the Support Goat who is tolerant, loving and kind 😊 |
